Storm Desmond (2015) one of the first ‘named storms’ did a lot of damage. But, as the proverb has it, the clouds did indeed have silver linings. A number of local Beech trees, weakened by age, were brought down. Given the large number of downed trees it took a while for Hughie to get to them and tidy them up. As luck would have it this was the perfect amount of time for the spalting to do its work. When the wood was finally sawn, it was found to be beautifully figured throughout its length. Some of the more gently figured wood was sawn as 4” x 4” lengths to make legs - which were turned by Michael B. The top was split and book-matched to create the symmetrical pattern you can see. Edged in more beech (darkened with traditional wood stain made from roasted walnut shells) the table is definitely one of a kind.
